Research Interests

  • Mineral scaling of RO membranes
  • RO desalination and recycling of Agricultural drainage water

Projects

My current research project focuses on calcium sulfate surface scaling on nanofiltration membranes in a reverse osmosis system.  It is essential to prevent calcium sulfate scaling in order to maximize the efficiency and lifespan of a reverse osmosis membrane used in desalination processes (particularly for agricultural drainage water in California).  The first objective is to study crystallization characteristics on various nanofilitration membranes and determine how surface structure of membranes affects scaling. The second objective is to determine the optimal commercial scale-inhibitor and dose for feed water pre-treatment.
